Huntington couple has triplets

March 14, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Malinda and Bryan Davis need three car seats, three high chairs -- in fact, three of everything.

Malinda Davis, 35, gave birth Wednesday morning to triplets at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Sidney, Savannah and Reece were born at 9:09 a.m., 9:10 a.m. and 9:11 a.m., respectively.

The Huntington couple already have two other daughters, Chase, 10, and Delaney, 6.

Malinda said the triplets were born without the use of fertility drugs.

"When we found out there was more than one baby, we were just surprised," Malinda Davis said. "We just couldn't believe it. It's so rare."

In 2005, triplets and higher order multiple births only occurred in 161.8 per 100,000 births, according to the National Vital Statistic Reports released in 2007 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"My initial reaction when we saw the ultrasound was pure shock," Bryan Davis, 36, said. "I was floored. I went home and prayed to God and asked why he was giving us three more babies."

Bryan Davis said after the initial shock wore off he felt very blessed to have more children.

"We're so thankful they've not had any problems. They're healthy and happy and so amazing," he said.

Malinda Davis said she wanted to keep the triplets until she was at least 36 weeks along and almost made it.

"I was scheduled for a c-section for Saturday, but they decided to do it Wednesday instead," Malinda Davis said. "We're so blessed because they haven't had any health problems or anything."

The triplets all weighed more than four pounds.

Sidney weighed 4 pounds, 11 ounces; Savannah weighed 4 pounds, 13 ounces; and Reece weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces.

Another rarity with the triplets is that Sidney and Savannah are possibly identical.

"They look identical," Malinda said. "But, we don't know for sure yet. They did tests to find out and the doctors said they were 98 percent sure they were identical."

Malinda Davis' sister, Katrina Dowis, of Columbia, S.C., came in for the birth of the triplets.

"Malinda made it almost 36 weeks, which is amazing," Dowis said. "We were surprised at first, but those babies are such a blessing."

Malinda's other sister, Penny Wiles, of Huntington, said she was in a state of disbelief when she found out her sister was having triplets and afterward started a prayer group with Chase and Delaney for the triplets at Buffalo Elementary School.

"We prayed for the babies and everyone in the prayer group prayed things would go smoothly and they did," Wiles said. "We expected they would be so tiny and have to be in incubators and everything, but they are surprisingly very healthy and they're so beautiful."

Malinda Davis said she finally was able to hold Sidney for the first time Friday.

"It's been so hectic and busy here that I haven't been able to hold her until now," she said.
