Kindergarten children continue stuffed animal Olympics
PROCTORVILLE -- Fairland East Elementary School's kindergarten students continued its seven-year tradition of the Teddy Bear Olympics on Tuesday.
Teacher Jana Flynn started the event when her son, now a sixth-grader at the middle school, was in kindergarten. While the kids have a lot of fun participating in various activities with their stuffed bears and animals, Flynn said it's all related to learning.
"We do all the fun activities to help them remember the letter 'B,'" Flynn said.
Each letter of the alphabet is surrounded by a fun lesson, she said, to "try to give them something solid for each letter."
The Teddy Bear Olympics have become the most recognized of all 26 letters, though the eight classes work to make each one fun and memorable. On Monday, they graphed apples for the letter 'A,' Flynn added.
Tuesday's fun games included the bear toss, relay races, a parachute toss, obstacle course, bean bag toss, bear hunt and bear-related story.
"We review at the end of the day and talk about what we learned," said Flynn, who added that students will go through each letter of the alphabet three times each year.
