October 13, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

CHARLESTON -- ACLU West Virginia co-founder Jack McOwen will be honored at the annual ACLU-WV Bill of Rights dinner on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Edgewood Country Club in Charleston.

Deputy Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, Paul Sheridan will also be recognized. Erwin Chemerinsky, a constitutional scholar, will keynote the event.

Jack McOwen, Huntington native, was elected the first president of the ACLU of West Virginia in 1971. Along with being a cooperating attorney for the organization, he also served on the Cabell County Democratic Committee. In 1970, McOwen challenged Robert C. Byrd in the Democratic Senate primary. He will be posthumously awarded the Sid Bell Memorial Award for his service to the West Virginia affiliate of the ACLU.
