Disc golf benefits River Cities Harvest

January 09, 2010 @ 10:00 PM

SUMMITT, Ky -- It was perfect weather Saturday for the first Ice Bowl at Armco Park -- cold and snowy.

Several dozen people showed up for the inaugural Disc Golf Ice Bowl off U.S. 60 near the Kentucky State Police barracks west of Ashland. The event raised $600 in cash and 100 pounds of food for River Cities Harvest, an Ashland food pantry, said Tim Huff, tournament director.

"It's perfect weather for this," said Jeff Harshbarger, a member of the Huntington Disc Golf Club. Most of the 33 disc golfers were from the Huntington area, but one person drove up from Lexington, Ky, to compete. "We've had a good time."

"We're just out enjoying the weather," said Don Verderosa of Huntington. "I've been playing for about six months. I love it. This is my first Ice Bowl."

The goal of the Ice Bowl is to raise money and non-perishable food for local food pantries, Huff said.

The disc golf course at Armco Park has been open about a year, said Huff, who has been playing disc golf for about a dozen years. The sport "is really taking off," he said. "It's growing by leaps and bounds. If you can throw a Frisbee, you can play this game. It's something the whole family can do."

Armco has two 18-hole courses laid out on a hillside overlooking U.S. 60. The players were tromping along a snow-covered hill throwing discs into a series of metal baskets. Many of the players had a backpack with up to a dozen discs in them, sort of like a golf bags. Some of the discs are designed to fly left to right, others right to left, Huff said.

"The courses are inexpensive to put in and there's no upkeep," Huff said. "It costs $8 for a disc. After that it's free."

The event will serve as a warm-up for the Ice Bowl at Huntington's Rotary Park in three weeks, he said.
