Firefighters battle two blazes
HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Fire Department battled two house fires Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Chris Franklin said the first call came in at 12:08 p.m. for a one-story home in the 600 block of Roby Road. He said flames and smoke were showing upon arrival.
No one was home, and the two residents told officials that they had left about five minutes prior to the fire, which was likely to be ruled accidental, Franklin said.
"It toasted up the inside pretty good," Franklin said.
The second call came in about two hours later for a three-story home in the 800 block of 24th Street. Franklin said when he arrived, he was met by the homeowners. They told him the mattress and box springs had caught fire on an upper floor, but that the box springs were still burning.
Franklin said he sent up a couple firefighters with extinguishers and water, only to find that most of the room was up in flames.
"It completely gutted that room," he said, adding that there also was some fire and water damage to the attic.
Several Huntington stations played a role in extinguishing both fires, Franklin said.
