Rotary sign could take weeks to replace

January 20, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- An official with the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District believes it could be several weeks before a damaged iconic sign along U.S. Route 60 is replaced.

The Rotary Park sign's oversized wheel and name were symbolic of Rotary International. It consisted of concrete, steel and metal, said parks director Jim McClelland.

"It was one of a kind," he said. "It will take us weeks to replace it. It will take a long, long time."

The incident happened earlier this month. McClelland said police reported a driver leaned down to pick up a phone, lost control of his vehicle and hit the sign.

McClelland said authorities indicated the driver did not have insurance. He said officials will attempt to recover damages from the driver.

McClelland said an official had contacted the Park Board's insurer, but he is worried the company may not cover replacement costs because the sign was not identified with a value on its policy.
