Fire causes major damage to home in Huntington

January 28, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A house already under renovation likely will need to be torn down following an early morning fire Wednesday in Huntington.

Cabell County 911 received word of the fire at 1:41 a.m. in the 1100 block of 28th Street.

Huntington Fire Deputy Chief Ralph Rider said the fire started in a crawl space underneath the single-story home. The crawl space acted as a horizontal chimney spreading across underneath portions of the house. Openings constructed for wiring and other needs provided avenues for fire to climb above the floor and into the house.

The fire's location, underneath the house, made it difficult for firefighters to extinguish. Rider said his crews cleared the scene at 4:15 am.

"Pretty much the whole underneath of the house was on fire," he said.

The house was empty at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Rider said gas and electricity were connected to the house and construction materials were spread throughout, but he was unsure if renovations contributed to the cause.

There were no immediate signs of arson, Rider said.
