Huntington's Kitchen to host grand reopening today
HUNTINGTON -- Huntington's Kitchen will host its grand reopening from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at the kitchen, 911 3rd Ave. in downtown Huntington.
The opening comes after two months of renovation to the kitchen, which began when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was in Huntington filming "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution." The kitchen's management has been taken over by Ebenezer Medical Outreach, Inc., which received renovation help thanks to volunteer electricians, plumbers, carpenters and from a donation from Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Huntington's Kitchen will serve as a community food center, where people can learn to cook in a fully equipped kitchen that can teach 12 people at one time. The facility will offer daily cooking classes and demonstrations. Classes will be available for a donation of $10 per class, but scholarships will be available for those who cannot afford the fee. Courses at the kitchen will offer 10 classes using Oliver's recipes and will help give people a foundation of cooking skills, from boiling an egg to chopping and eventually creating a family meal.
Oliver created the Huntington kitchen modeling a similar program he started in the United Kingdom. The television show is scheduled to begin airing at 9 p.m. Friday, March 26, on ABC. Ebenezer Medical Outreach is planning a premiere as a fundraiser for Thursday, March 25.
The show, as well as the kitchen, promotes healthy eating habits by encouraging Tri-State residents to cook meals from scratch using fresh ingredients.
