Flames burn through Ceredo apartments
CEREDO -- Officials suspect an electrical problem may have ignited a fire that forced the evacuation of 24 apartments early Tuesday, Feb. 23, according to Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Clinton Burley.
Wayne County 911 received word of the fire at 3:30 a.m. Burley said it was located at 16 Greenwood Drive. The 1970s-era complex includes two buildings with 12 apartments each. No injuries were reported.
Burley said a team of firefighters contained Tuesday's fire to one side of one building. He said flames extended through the roof, making the department's ladder truck necessary.
Firefighters credit an alert resident with calling 911 and notifying neighbors. Burley said that resident heard crackling in the walls. Upon arrival, firefighters located flames in the downstairs apartment. It quickly spread upstairs and through the third-floor roof.
Burley said six apartments received varying levels of fire damage. Residents in the unaffected building were able to quickly reoccupy their apartments.
A total of 35 firefighters responded. Burley explained the blaze required a heavy manpower response because of simultaneous fires burning in multiple apartments.
The response was led by the Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department, but included assistance from additional volunteers and professionals alike. The Huntington Fire Department contributed its deputy chief and two engine companies, according to Cabell County 911. Other volunteer departments responding were Kenova and Lavalette, along with Cattlettsburg and England Hill in Kentucky.
The first crews started to clear the scene at 6:50 a.m.
