Counseling Center CEO to speak at July 6 event

July 05, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A weekly support group for friends and family members of substance abusers will host the CEO of The Counseling Center of Portsmouth, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 6.

Ed Hughes will speak to the Loved Ones' group at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Center, 1524 10th Ave., in Huntington. The Loved Ones' group is based on a seven-week DVD series that Hughes created for family and friends of people who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs. It provides stories of hope and covers topics such as learning about addiction and its progression, ways you can help and pathways to recovery.

The group was brought to the Barnett Center late last year by Huntington residents Cary Dixon and Margie Copley.

The women, who have been friends for about 20 years, said they grew tired of watching their own family members and friends suffer from pain brought on by drug and alcohol addiction.

The group meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Barnett Center. Participants are not required to enroll in the program or give any personal information. They also can skip a session if they want and re-enter the program at any time.

For more information about Hughes' visit or the weekly meetings, call Dixon at 304-633-9632.
