Putnam circuit judge debate canceled
WINFIELD, W.Va. -- A Chamber of Commerce-sponsored debate between incumbent Putnam Circuit Judge Ed Eagloski and Democratic challenger Phil Stowers has been canceled because Eagloski has declined to participate.
Marty Chapman, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce president, said that a letter received this week from Eagloski cited a conflict in his schedule but also added that the judge "did not feel that judges should be debating."
The event, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9, had been requested by Chamber members, Chapman said. With other area Chambers having similar debates geared more toward the Supreme Court race, Chapman said he felt it would be a good idea to follow suit in Putnam County.
"The judge's race is probably the tightest race we have here. That's why we were offering that particular group the opportunity to debate their views."
In a press release, Stowers said he was disappointed that Eagloski will not debate. "I can't imagine a better forum for the discussion of how to improve Putnam County's Circuit Court," he said.
Stowers noted that candidates for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals have been participating in debates.
Eagloski was unavailable for comment.
