HUNTINGTON -- Huntington Police are investigating a incident involving a woman who allegedly shot herself in the chest Wednesday night in the 300 block of Buffington Street in Guyandotte.

Responding units arrived at a boat ramp in Guyandotte about 7 p.m. and found a 34-year-old Huntington woman lying on her back, just south of the boat ramp in a wooded area.

A Huntington police report stated that the woman had a gunshot wound to the left side of her chest. She had been shot with a .32 caliber Smith and Wesson, said the report. She was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital for treatment and released Thursday.

The woman's boyfriend told detectives that he witnessed the shooting and was taken into custody for questioning, the report said.

Huntington Police Det. Chris Sperry said they found some marijuana in the boyfriend's possession and charged him with a misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

The report said the marijuana was located in the boyfriend's front pocket, along with .32 caliber pistol rounds.

Detectives are questioning whether the woman shot herself or if it was someone else.

"Both of them had been talking about suicide," Sperry said. "We'll know more when the fingerprint results from the gun come back."
