Earned Income Tax Credit group offers tax help

HUNTINGTON -- Some individuals and families can have their taxes prepared for free by the Southwest Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)/Asset Building Coalition.

Tax preparation sites will be stationed throughout Cabell, Wayne and Lincoln counties in West Virginia and Lawrence County in Ohio.

The earned income tax credit (EITC) is for families with annual incomes less than $41,646. The EITC is a special federal tax credit that may provide up to $4,824 for qualified filers. Tax returns can be filed electronically and refunds deposited into a bank account within seven to 10 days at no charge.

Filers should take the following with them to free tax preparation sites: Social Security cards of the filer, spouse and children; photo identification; federal IRS tax forms for 2008; wage and earnings statement (W-2 forms) from each 2008 employer; other tax forms or receipts of income interest, and dividends; child and dependent care information; and a copy of last year's tax returns, if available.

Goodwill Industries, 1005 Virginia Ave., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 14, Feb. 28, March 14, March 28, April 11.

Cabell County Main Library, 455 9th St. Plaza, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7, Feb. 21, March 7, March 21, April 4.

Marshall University main campus, room to be determined, every Thursday, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 5 to April 9.

In Wayne County:

Catholic Community Services, 300 Hall St., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday by appointment only Feb. 3 to April 15, for appointments call 304-272-6005.

In Lincoln County:

Catholic Community Services, 352 Mansion St., Hamlin, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 3 to April 14, also available by appointment by calling 304-824-3438
