The National Maritime Days Celebration of the Port of Huntington, an annual event at Harris Riverfront Park, is washed out for this weekend.

The event -- originally scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday -- has been postponed until Aug. 29-31 of Labor Day weekend.

"Mother Nature got involved," David Smith, the Huntington Legislative Committee chairman and former president of the Huntington District Waterways Association, said Tuesday. "The precipitation we received over the past weekend has caused the river to rise, and it probably will not crest until today."

The Ohio River's high water is covering the area where the boats would dock and where various groups would have displays for the celebration.

"Current predictions suggest the wall will be under until Saturday, leaving the site completely inundated with water," Smith said.

Admission to the event is free and will be held at the Harris Riverfront Park, behind Pullman Square.

The Maritime Days Celebration is an opportunity to see the towboats float by Harris Riverfront Park a little more closely. Some of the events scheduled include towboat tours, equipment display and demonstration, riverman demonstrations and contests, and river employment opportunities.

The Port of Huntington is the top inland river port in the nation according to the Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center. It is also the seventh largest port in the United States.
