Seniors try out newly opened 14 West Senior Center
HUNTINGTON -- They chatted, laughed and munched on ham, macaroni and cheese and fried apples.
The seniors who stopped by the newly opened 14 West Senior Center on Tuesday look forward to future visits.
Located on 14th Street West in the former Central City Market building -- adjacent to where the farmers market sets up shop in the summer -- the center is open to seniors 60 and older from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will serve lunch daily, as well as offer exercise classes, crafts and informational sessions on senior issues.
The center will turn no seniors away, but encourages donations for the services of either $1 to $2.50, depending on income, said Barbara George, a supervisor with Meals on Wheels.
"I think (the new senior center is) wonderful," said Dona Patrick of West Huntington, who stopped by for lunch with her husband, Gene. "It gives you something to do. You can meet new people and get out of the house."
The Patricks had lunch with some folks from Madison Manor -- Gloria Snyder, Doris Cooper and Ila Freeman.
"We're planning all kinds of activities -- bingo, ceramics, exercise classes and whatever we feel like doing," Snyder said.
Snyder said the new center was established with the help of state legislators, including Sen. Evan Jenkins and Delegates Dale Stephens and Doug Reynolds, as well as the Cabell County Community Service Organization, which runs it.
It's a temporary location. CCSO hopes to eventually move into the former West Middle School building when it's vacated.
