Statewide meetings planned on federal education dollars

November 20, 2009 @ 12:46 AM

CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Department of Education is holding three informational sessions about the federal government's "Race to the Top" competitive grant.

The meetings will aim to provide an overview and garner feedback from community members, parents, students, teachers and administrators about the federal proposal. The state's final draft of how it would spend funding is to be ready for counties in January.

Each meeting is from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with dates at the Holiday Inn in Martinsburg, Monday, Nov. 30; the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, Tuesday, Dec. 1; and the Charleston Marriott, Friday, Dec. 4.

Registration is required county teams identified to attend and be filled out online by Monday, Nov. 23, at http://wvde.state.wv.us/forms/200912-race-to-the-top.

West Virginia must show that it supports serious, coherent, and comprehensive reform. State proposals must have a comprehensive, integrated emphasis on standards, assessment, accountability; quality educators; comprehensive data systems; and low performing schools and struggling students.

States that receive a Race to the Top grant must use at least 50 percent of their award to provide subgrants to participating local educational agencies (LEAs), based upon LEAs' relative shares of funding under Part A of Title I. To be eligible to participate in a state's Race to the Top proposal, a district must explicitly agree to implement the plans in the state's proposal by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.
