Painting classes bring color to winter

January 06, 2009 @ 08:30 PM

HUNTINGTON -- On an otherwise gray and cold January day, there was a burst of warm color inside the Painted Palette Art Studio on Monday, where students were learning oil painting techniques from artist and instructor Patricia Reed.

Reed, who holds a bachelor's and master's in fine arts from Marshall University, offers the fine art oil painting classes from 6-9 p.m. Mondays. She said classes are ongoing, and every four weeks, there is a critique to assess what the students have learned.

"I believe in teaching from the ground up," Reed said. "If you're going to teach something, that's how you need to teach it."

Reed said her students learn about the complexities of color, value and intensity and how to mix colors using the color wheel. They also study the importance of composition and design.

"The students are constantly learning," Reed said. "This is what I love to do."

Reed, originally from Philadelphia, Pa., has had her paintings in exhibitions throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio and also in the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco, Calif. She has received awards in watercolor, mixed media and oil painting.
