Fire marshal: Cooking mishap led to Ohio fire

January 07, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

CHEASAPEAKE, Ohio -- An Ohio state fire investigator determined unattended cooking was the cause of a Monday night fire above Deeds Family Vision Care on County Road 1 in Chesapeake.

Shane Cartmill, public information officer with the Division of State Fire Marshal, said an investigator determined the cause of the fire was accidental after interviewing apartment residents and examining physical evidence. Cartmill said the fire most likely began when a pan was left on the stove in an upstairs apartment.

An apartment above the business caught fire just after 10 p.m. Monday. The fire quickly spread to the two other apartments on the second floor of the building.

All three apartments suffered heavy fire damage, and the business below suffered water damage. No one was injured.

Cartmill said unattended cooking fires were the number one cause, amounting to 25 percent, of Ohio residential fires in 2007. The accident should serve as a constant reminder to practice proper fire safety habits in the home, Cartmill said.

"Though there were terrible consequences with the fire, (the accident) was not as devastating as it could have been," Cartmill said.
