Blood donor says experience is rewarding
HUNTINGTON -- Jeffery Fetty closed out 2012 by giving the gift of life -- blood.
The 35-year-old from Huntington was among 10 productive donors participating in a year-end blood drive at the American Red Cross blood donation center along Veterans Memorial Boulevard.
Donating blood is nothing new for Fetty, a member of Beulah Ann Baptist Church in Ona. He started giving at age 19 as he served with the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas.
"It's real rewarding," he said. ""I'm a Christian. We're all of the time trying to love our neighbor, and that just seemed like another thing that you can try to do."
Fetty attended Monday's blood drive thanks to a routine note from the Red Cross. It reminded him that he was eligible to make another appointment. He visits a blood drive once every 2 to 3 weeks.
Red Cross spokeswoman Cheryl L. Gergely said Monday's blood drive fell just short of its goal. Organizers had hoped for 15 productive donors, but Gergely didn't seem disappointed; she described current supplies as sufficient.
