Accident leads to DUI arrest

HUNTINGTON -- A woman was in jail Thursday night, charged with crashing into a school bus while under the influence of drugs.
No one was injured in the crash that happened just before 3 p.m. in the 2600 block of Piedmont Road, said Huntington Police Captain Mike Albers.
Regina Rose Toppins, 30, was driving westbound on the road when she crossed the center line on the two-lane road and had a head-on collision with the bus, which had one student on board, said Albers.
That crash occurred just as officers were en route to a business in the area, where an employee reported the woman had crashed into the business' main building minutes earlier, said Albers.
The description of the vehicle involved in the head-on crash matched the description of the vehicle in the hit-and-run incident, Albers said.
When officers arrived on the scene at Piedmont Road, Albers said it was clear Toppins was impaired.
He said she did not demonstrate behavior consistent with drinking alcohol, but officers did find evidence of an inhalant in her vehicle on the scene.
Toppins was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of a controlled substance and incarcerated at the Western Regional Jail. She had not been arraigned Thursday evening.
At press time, Toppins had not been charged in connection with the hit-and-run.
