Guyandotte Civil War Days continues

Purchase this photoHUNTINGTON -- History will come to life again this weekend as one Huntington neighborhood celebrates its heritage.
The 23rd annual Guyandotte Civil War Days festival continues through Sunday, Nov. 4, and features period music, craft displays, museums and, of course, a full re-enactment of the Confederate raid on Guyandotte, which took place Nov. 10 and 11, 1861.
New to the event this year is the nationally traveling exhibit "Civil War 150," which features five panels to take participants through the gritty war.
The panels are: The Nation Divides; 1861: The Union is Dissolved; The Cruel War; 1863: Turning Point; and The Price of Victory (1864-1865). The goal of the exhibit is to help participants experience the war through the eyes of major political figures, soldiers, families and freedmen.
More than 500 local elementary school students took their journey to the past during School Day on Friday, when re-enactors throughout Guyandotte gave the students a variety of hands-on history lessons about the Civil War and life during that era.
The proverbial time portal will be back open bright and early Saturday morning following opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. with open camps, merchant locations, haunted tours, memorial services and the eventual battle.
