Speedway donates $1,250 to Huntington Area Food Bank
HUNTINGTON -- At a time when more and more people struggle to keep food on the tables, the directors and managers of Speedway SuperAmerica are hoping to help.
Four representatives of Speedway SuperAmerica presented a check for $1,250 to the Huntington Area Food Bank on Tuesday.
Speedway (Division 22 Region 43) was a finalist for the Speedway SuperAmerica LLC Presidential Award 2008 and received a grant for $2,500 to help their community. They gave half of those funds to the Huntington food bank and half to a food bank in Ohio, according to regional director Charlie Runyon.
Runyon said the group wanted to give back to the community that had been so good to them.
"We were looking for a way to do the most good in a market that's been good for us," he said.
An estimated 91,000 people -- 6,000 more people per month compared to last year -- are served by the Huntington Area Food Bank each month, according to Brooke Ash, assistant director of the food bank.
Ash said the donation from Speedway SuperAmerica is a big help, especially near the end of the year.
"We are extremely appreciative that they have stepped up to the plate at a time when the economy is bad," she said.
Executive director Jon Rickey said the money would help the food bank to order more food through the food purchasing program as well as pay for the gas to send food throughout 17 counties.
"With demand being up, this helps the supply side," he said.
Regional manager Rick Porter said Speedway SuperAmerica was more than happy to help.
"It makes us feel good, especially this time of year when there's a lot of people less fortunate out there who are in need," he said.
District managers Jason Hunt and John Bush also visited the food bank on Tuesday.
The food bank is located at 1327 7th Ave., next to Southern States, in Huntington.
