Conference focuses on local farmers, local food

November 05, 2011 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Vegetable farmer Zeke Wood of Lincoln County was out to learn more about operating a high tunnel greenhouse. Jerry Baker of Salt Rock was looking for tips to help his community's farmers market their produce better. And 11-year-old Carter Taylor of Jackson County, who already has a business selling show pigs and meat, got some advice on getting chickens to produce more eggs.

Those were just a few of the stories from farmers who are in Huntington this weekend for the Tri-State Farm and Food Conference, which continues Saturday, Nov. 5, at New Baptist Church at 610 28th St., in the building that was formerly the Tri-State Ice Arena.

Saturday's workshops will cover topics such as irrigation, grant opportunities, high tunnels, tax tips, edible landscaping, beginning farming, producing for a wholesale market and much more.

The event is hosted through the Small Farm Center at West Virginia University, with local help from Unlimited Future Inc., which is helping more and more small farm owners. The goal of the event is to connect farmers, chefs, processors and consumers in the Tri-State food industry, which the West Virginia University Small Farm Center estimates to be a $1.2 billion industry.
