Deputies: Repair accident kills man

November 29, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON - Investigators believe an at-home repair job ended with a man's death this week along Camp Branch Road, south of Huntington in Cabell County.

Emergency dispatchers received word at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday about the discovery of a man's body.

The Sheriff's Office responded and identified the deceased as Ronnie A. Adkins, 49, of 4637 Camp Branch Road, said Chief Deputy Sam Scheidler. The man died at his residence.

Adkins' body was found pinned between a truck bed and a full-size insert. Scheidler said the insert was designed with a hydraulic lifting system, which allowed the truck to operate similar to a dump truck. The estimated 500-pound insert was installed in a Ford F-250 truck.

Investigators believe Adkins had used a jack to elevate the insert during repairs. The jack was placed on soft ground. Investigators believe the jack fell, thus resulting in Adkins death.

"There was no evidence of any foul play," Scheidler said.

A brother was the last person to physically see Adkins. That occurred Monday, Scheidler said. Investigators believe the fatal accident occurred Tuesday.

Adkins was known to go days without contacting family. However, his family became concerned when Adkins did not attend Thanksgiving festivities. That led to a search and subsequent discovery Friday, Scheidler said.
