Festival of Lights celebrates Hindu custom

November 30, 2008 @ 10:35 PM

HUNTINGTON -- The annual Hindu holiday, Festival of Lights, will be observed at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Huntington High School.

Known as Diwali, the festival is centered on the triumph of good over evil and celebrates the Indian new year, said Aruna Velury of Ashland.

"It's one of the most popular festivals in South Asia," said Velury, the current president of the Tri-State India Association.

She said the two-hour event allows people to share in a significant cultural festival.

The event has typically drawn around 300 people. Velury said there is a religious side, but it's also celebrated to signify a successful harvest.

Following the show will be a traditional Indian dinner. The show is free, but the dinner is $15 for adults and $10 for children.

The money raised goes to support a local charity in the Tri-State.
