Camp NEW You aims to inspire families to live healthfully

April 10, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A camp to help youth and their parents identify and practice healthy lifestyle changes is in the development stage at Marshall University.

Camp NEW (Nutrition, Exercise, Weight Management) You will assist youth in reducing unhealthy body weight and chronic disease risk through increased physical activity and sound nutrition.

The camp is the brainchild of pediatric cardiologist Dr. William Neal, a Huntington native and professor and doctor at West Virginia University.

Marshall University's Division of Exercise Science, Sport and Recreation is excited to announce the development of the camp, which will include group outdoor activities, hands-on nutrition classes, educational sessions and physical activity. There will also be special events such as movie nights, pottery-making class and local trips.

Camp NEW You is a year-long process that begins with a two-week residential camp held on the Marshall University campus beginning summer 2010. Following the camp, three follow-up weekends will be held throughout the year to offer support, encouragement and education to the campers and their families. In addition, each child will be assigned a personal lifestyle coach to provide support during the camp and after.

The camp program focuses on goal setting and decision making and will emphasize the importance of parent participation in helping to create home environments that provide regular opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity.

More information on getting involved with the camp is available by calling Gina Sobrero Evans at 304-696-2924 or e-mailing evansg@marshall.edu.
