Southern W.Va. high school students perform in honors bands

ONA -- More than 200 of Southern West Virginia's best high school musicians took the stage Thursday evening at Cabell Midland High School as part of the All-Area Concert Band and All-Area Symphonic Band concert.

Students from 10 high schools in five counties performed in the honor groups. High schools participating were Buffalo, Cabell Midland, Lincoln County, Huntington, Hurricane, Poca, Ripley, Spring Valley, Wayne and Winfield. Tommy Thompson and David Phillips served as clinicians and guest conductors.

Earlier in the week, an estimated 1,500 middle and high school students performed as part of the annual West Virginia Band Festival. In the festival, middle and high school bands play for judges and are rated based on their performance and the music's difficulty level. Ratings are given on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 meaning superior and 5 meaning poor. Music difficulty ranges from level 1, or very easy, to level 6, or most difficult.

Here are the results of the festival: Milton Middle School, level 2, rating 2; Barboursville Middle School, level 2, rating 3; Beverly Hills Middle School, level 2, rating 2; Huntington Middle School, level 1, rating 2; Enslow Middle School, level 1, rating 4; Winfield Middle School, level 3, rating 1; George Washington Middle School, level 2, rating 1; Poca Middle School, levels 2 and 4, rating 2; Hurricane Middle School, level 2, rating 2; Wayne Middle School, levels 1 and 2, rating 3; Ceredo-Kenova Middle School, level 2, rating 3; Buffalo Middle School, level 2, rating 2; Cabell Midland High School, levels 5 and 6, rating 1; Huntington High School, level 5, rating 1; Hurricane High School, level 4, rating 1; Spring Valley High School - symphonic, level 4, rating 1; Spring Valley High School - 9th, level 3, rating 1; Spring Valley High School - wind ensemble, levels 5 and 6, rating 1; Wayne High School, level 4, rating 2; Buffalo High School, levels 3 and 4, rating 2; Poca High School, levels 4 and 5, rating 2; Winfield High School, levels 5 and 6, rating 1.
