Kenova woman killed in car accident
HUNTINGTON — Deborah L. Rakes of Kenova died Sunday after a head-on collision on 5th Street Hill, according to Huntington Police Capt. Mike Albers, who confirmed the fatality late Sunday evening.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m. Sunday and involved a white Toyota Camry and a white minivan. The drivers of both vehicles sustained injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Rakes, the driver of the Toyota, was unconscious and had to be extricated from the vehicle by Huntington firefighters. Her vehicle sustained significant damage to the driver’s side and came to rest on a hillside in the northbound lane of 5th Street Hill just south of Honeysuckle Lane.
Fifth Street Hill was closed to traffic for more than two hours following the accident.
The accident was just one of several Sunday as a rain/snow mix pelted the Tri-State.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 between the 5th Street and Hal Greer Boulevard exits were shut down at approximately 5:30 p.m. after a multiple-vehicle accident. Injuries were reported, but their severity was unknown.
Lawrence County 911 dispatchers reported eight accidents from 5:30 to 6 p.m., including a rollover accident with two injuries along Ohio 243 and County Road 2.
