Huntington orchestra sells out Christmas concert

December 21, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

A Saturday concert featuring a special blend of traditional holiday favorites sold out the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center, leaving a few unfortunate customers at the door.

The show was hosted by the Huntington Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra played selections from "12 Days of Christmas" to "Deck the Halls." The concert was sold out before the event opened it's doors at 7 p.m.

"I would really like to thank the Tri-State for coming out and supporting the arts and helping me sell out my first show," said executive director T. Hogan Haas. "I am thrilled to be in my new position and to sell out my first show."

People who came late tried everything from requesting to stand during the show to trying to buy from ticketholders. The show, nearly two hours long, was filled with guest appearances and numerous holiday selections.

"If anybody can sit through the whole show and not leave in the holiday spirit, they must be some kind of Grinch," Haas said. "It's just an all-American holiday concert."

Jack Vital, a season ticket holder said he has seen a lot of orchestras from around the world perform and the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, led by Kimo Furumoto, is as good as any he has ever seen.

"Furumoto is excellent. What he has been able to get out of the orchestra is wonderful," Vital said.

Don Maxwell, who drove from Ashland, Ky. to attend the concert, said he wished he was able to get into the show. He came with friends who had tickets, but he had not purchased his ticket yet.

"I'm disappointed to say the least," Maxwell said. "I drove in fully expecting to attend, but they were sold out. I have come to the summer concerts and enjoyed it a lot. I also really like this facility."

Haas recommended that patrons go to huntingtonsymphony.org to find tickets and showtimes. He also added that the orchestra was selling sweatshirts and season tickets which he says makes excellent Christmas gifts.

The next show by the Huntington Symphony Orchestra is a performance of the "The Bachelors" on Feb. 7, 2009. Tickets for the next orchestra event are on sale now and can be purchased at their Web site or by calling (304) 525-0670.
