Police blotter: Multiple burglaries reported in Huntington over weekend
HUNTINGTON -- Police are investigating several burglaries and thefts reported in Huntington over the last several days.
The details, according to Huntington police reports:
- A 51-year-old man told police that an apartment in the 600 block of 9th Street was broken into between 2:40 and 3 p.m. Sunday by someone who pried open a door. A lamp, commemorative anniversary pens, six watches, jewelry and two jewelry boxes were taken. The combined value of the items plus the damaged door was more than $1,000.
- A 74-year-old man told police that a washing machine, dryer, three-piece living room suite and a bedroom suite, totaling nearly $3,000, were stolen between 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. Thursday on Washington Avenue. The man stated that a neighbor observed the burglary and provided vehicle information.
- A burglary took place in the 2500 block of 12th Avenue between 5 p.m. Friday and 1:15 a.m. Saturday. A 30-year-old Huntington woman told police she discovered a broken window and numerous items missing, including $440 worth of DVDs, two computer towers valued at a combined $500, a PlayStation 3 and game worth $564 and a DVD player worth $125.
- A burglary was reported between 2 p.m. Friday and 1:32 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of 11th Street. A Huntington woman said her front window was broken and her house ransacked. Among the items taken include a refrigerator, window blinds, curtains and a gas log fireplace, with a combined value of $1,550.
- A 45-year-old Huntington man reported that his storage unit in the 1200 block of Van Buren Avenue was broken into between Tuesday, Sept. 30, and Sunday. Numerous items with a combined value of more than $500 were missing.
Reports from the Huntington Police Department also included:
SEXUAL ASSAULT: A 14-year-old West Hamlin girl told police she was at the YMCA at 935 10th Ave. on Saturday afternoon when a 17-year-old Huntington man she knew took off her pants and forced himself on top of her. She went to St. Mary's Medical Center on Monday to be checked.
BREAKING AND ENTERING: An unknown person broke open the door to the storage unit owned by and next to Tudor's Biscuit World in the 400 block of 29th Street between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday. An employee reported that an unknown amount of food was taken.
EMBEZZLEMENT: The general manager of Rally's, located in the 600 block of 5th Avenue, reported that a former employee who was there on a work release program stole between $1,500 and $2,000 between June 2 and Sept. 8. The suspect is currently housed at the Lakin State Prison.
The following reports were provided by the Cabell County Sheriff's Office:
POSSESSION WITH INTENT, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND SHOPLIFTING: A deputy with the Cabell County Sheriff's Office was on patrol Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1:35 a.m., when the deputy noticed a man and a woman standing on the east side of the Speedway, located in the 4300 block of Route 60. The deputy approached the two, who had milk and soft drinks with them. The two said they were waiting on someone in the store.
A Cabell County sheriff's deputy said he observed a man throwing items to the ground about 1:35 a.m. Saturday while the deputy was patrolling in the 4300 block of U.S. 60. Arrested was Gary Cassidy of Huntington, who was accused of throwing a baggy under the deputy's vehicle with what looked to be marijuana. Also found was $808 in cash and a white plastic container with assorted pills. The pills included five morphine tabs, two Oxycodone, seven Xanax and three Roxycodone.
LARCENY, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WITH INTENT TO DELIVER: Brittany Slayton of Cross Lanes was arrested Thursday at the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival in Milton after a vendor told a sheriff's deputy that Slayton had stolen a purse and wallet from a booth. A search also turned up 12 Loratab pills in a small plastic bag, 20 Loratab pills in a small purple bottle, one Loracet pill and one baggy of green leafy substance, later identified as marijuana. Slayton, 37, was arraigned and released on $25,000 bond, signed by her mother.
