Winners of trustee races decided by coin toss

December 02, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

IRONTON -- Two flips of a coin decided the winners in a pair of trustee races in Lawrence County, Ohio, on Monday after recounts from the November election resulted in ties.

Larry Fraley, who had tied with Forrest Kerns, won the Hamilton Township trustee position. Michael McDaniel, who tied with Don Klaiber, won the Upper Township position. Catherine Overbeck, director of the Lawrence County Board of Elections, said both Fraley and McDaniel chose heads for the win.

"Both were very pleased with the outcome," Overbeck said. "They were very gracious and everyone was congratulating one another. There was no animosity."

The Hamilton Township race was tied at 254 votes, while the Upper Township race was tied at 1,272 votes following the recount Monday.

Overbeck said two other races also were too close to call on election night so a mandatory recount was initiated. One candidate, whose race did not need a recount, requested and paid for another recount in the chance that the candidate might win. The outcome of those three races did not change following the recount.
