Putnam board buys land near Hurricane High

February 20, 2009 @ 11:00 PM

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Board of Education plans to spend $2.5 million to acquire 16 acres of land adjacent to Hurricane High School.

Karen Nowviskie, Putnam's director of elementary education, confirmed that current owner Billy Lee Henderson has agreed to a lease-to-purchase agreement with Putnam County Schools allowing for payment over 10 years at 4 percent interest.

Plans for the property include additional school parking for Hurricane High School students and staff as well as possible future expansions for the high school and/or Hurricane Middle School.

Putnam County Schools recently paid off a 10-year lease agreement on property next to West Teays Elementary School, which includes a large soccer field and annex. Money previously used in making payments on the West Teays land now will be used to pay on the Hurricane property.
