Skaters help to feed the hungry
Sunday was a day to remember the empty stomachs in the area.
The third annual Mardi Gras Skate to Help Feed the Hungry was conducted Sunday at the Roll-a-rama at 137 7th Ave. Members of various parishes came together to raise funds and canned food items for the Mardi Gras skating celebration.
Families attending the event were invited to skate, play games, make their own Mardi Gras masks and eat a traditional Mardi Gras "king cake." Sacred Heart, St. Joseph's, St. Stephens and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic churches participated in the event.
"The food we collect is being raised for the Eccho food bank in Milton, and we are collecting money for our stewardship fund," said Kelle Karimpour of Our Lady of Fatima. "It's a good, fun event, but it's also a great fundraiser."
Mardi Gras is a celebration of "Fat Tuesday," a day of feasting preceding the fasting period of Lent. Karimpour said the skate is a good way for the kids to have fun with other children across the region.
Carol Crawford, development director at the Marshall Catholic Newman Center at Marshall University, also attended the skate. She was selling items to raise money for the Newman Center's retreat fund.
"I think the skating event does a wonderful job of bringing everyone together and teaching them about the season and what it means," Crawford said.
The Newman Center and Our Lady of Fatima are both planning on Lent services that will involve Lent and the story behind the holiday.
The event was free, and donations of money and canned foods were accepted.
