Meeting set to consider hiring of HHS band director
HUNTINGTON -- A special meeting of the Cabell County Board of Education has been scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, July 24, to discuss and possibly vote on the hiring of a new band director for Huntington High School.
The meeting will be in the Central Office Board Meeting Room at 2850 5th Ave. Meanwhile, a school committee is continuing its review of applicants for the position, assistant superintendent Todd Alexander said.
School administrators had placed the hiring of a band director on the agenda for the school board's meeting Tuesday, but Alexander pulled it off the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. That occurred before the board ever took up the issue. A headline in the Wednesday edition of The Herald-Dispatch incorrectly stated the board had taken the matter off the agenda.
Alexander said then that school officials had received several emails questioning the school's recommendation to hire Andrew Pinnick, a music teacher and band director in Wayne County Schools. Alexander also said that the review by school officials of 14 applicants for the position had been rushed because the school wished to have a new director on board for the start of band camp. At the meeting, several members of the public spoke in favor of hiring Lisa Skeens, who has been the show choir director and assistant band director at Huntington High for two years, for the position.
The board urged Alexander to have Huntington High officials complete their review of applicants soon and to arrange a time for a special meeting to make a hiring decision as soon as possible.
