Man arrested Saturday after robbery at gas station in Ohio
SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- A 22-year-old man was arrested Saturday evening shortly after an armed robbery was reported at the Marathon Gas Station located at 132 County Road 450, according to a release from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies arrested Mathew McFarland, of South Point, on an armed robbery charge after they found him walking along County Road 1 after the robbery, which was reported at 6:40 p.m.
The release said a man entered the store and acted like he was shopping, but when customers left the store he approached the counter, pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded money. He grabbed the cash register and tried to remove it, but he ended up grabbing money from it and fleeing the store on foot toward County Road 1.
That's where deputies say they found a man matching the description given to them at the gas station, only wearing different clothes. They questioned him and then found clothes matching those described by witnesses in a nearby wooded area, according to the release.
The release says McFarland confessed to robbing the gas station and provided deputies with the cash he said was taken in the robbery. He told them he had used a plastic toy gun, according to the release, and then took them to the location where he had tossed it, but they did not find the gun.
The case remains under investigation.
