Tourism in the Tri-State
National Travel and Tourism Week is a good time to ask "What is the CVB?"
Basically, the charge of the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau is to "sell" Huntington and Cabell County to those outside the area, convince them to visit us, then connect them with all there is to see and do once they are here.
Ideally, we'll also get them to stay all night as that is how we receive our funding -- through the 6 percent room tax on every hotel room in Cabell County. Half of that comes to the CVB and the other half goes to the collecting entity.
When you talk about tourism, your first thought might be of Disney World, the beach or a grand vacation. All those are obviously tourism-related trips, but really it can be considered tourism any time a person not from this area comes here to spend money in some way, whether it be at a restaurant, through shopping, visiting an attraction or spending the night.
And that highlights the importance of the CVB -- to draw visitors and tourists here to spend money. So the CVB is an economic engine for bringing dollars into the community.
Opportunity: Attend open house at the Visitors Center this Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
