Quitting the habit for good means staying alert

November 14, 2008 @ 10:00 PM

HUNTINGTON -- The Great American Smokeout coming up next week is another reminder of how beneficial it would be to kick the tobacco habit. But it's not enough just to quit. There's always that chance of relapse looming, and quitters have to be cautious and diligent to ward off temptation.

According to Duke University's Human Resources Web site, here are some tips for avoiding relapse.

Regularly review the benefits of quitting to your health, your finances and your family.

Remind yourself that there is no such thing as just one cigarette -- or even one puff. Be tough when cravings occur and ride them out because they don't last long.

Review your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself about your progress and setbacks.

Review your goals, accomplishments and any setbacks each week.

Stay in regular touch with those who support you.

Write down and discuss any new relapse triggers or risky situations you encounter.

Remember that relapse is always associated with triggers. Look out for these common ones: Being around tobacco users; drinking alcohol; stress; overconfidence; isolation from supporters; self-pity and anger; not complying with treatment recommendations; fatigue; and pessimism.
