Commemorative Candle Lighting honors Americans affected by Alzheimer's
HUNTINGTON -- People gathered at Ritter Park's fountain from all over the region to light candles Sunday evening as part of the National Commemorative Candle Lighting, an annual event sponsored by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
Hosted by Cabell County Community Services Organization Inc., the commemorative candle lighting at the fountain was part of the nationwide event to remember and honor Americans who have been or will be affected by Alzheimer's disease or related illnesses.
National Commemorative Candle Lighting is an annual event, held each November in recognition of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.
According to the foundation, it is estimated that Alzheimer's disease currently affects 2.4 million to 4.5 million Americans.
It is projected that the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease could more than triple to 16 million by mid-century.
The incidence of the disease doubles every five years after age 65.
