Fire severely damages home in Lavalette
LAVALETTE -- A house fire in Lavalette Wednesday afternoon not only damaged a home but also the home ownership dreams of Rebecca Craig.
Craig and her daughter have been living with her aunt in the 4400 block of Camp Creek Road in Lavalette. The two-story home with a detached garage across the street went into foreclosure early last year, and Craig has been working with the bank to try and purchase it.
She said the bank called Wednesday morning to talk with her about a price that fit her budget.
And while officials from the Lavalette Volunteer Fire Department weren't ready to call it suspicious, Craig is.
"It does seem suspicious," Craig said. "There have been people coming around taking the gutters and going through the garage. Both doors had been knocked open, and the bank gave us permission to go in and close them."
One firefighter said it appeared to have started in the front living area, then spread to the other parts of the house.
Smoke was still visible in numerous areas around the roof after the first floor fire had been extinguished.
