Another fire being labeled as suspicious
HUNTINGTON -- Firefighters and investigators have labeled another fire in Huntington's Fairfield neighborhood as suspicious, fanning worry among residents and investigators.
The latest fire -- the fifth in nine days -- was reported at 2:31 a.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of 10th Avenue. Huntington Deputy Fire Chief Jeffrey Earl described the structure as a small trailer, possibly lived in at one time. He said vines had grown onto the trailer.
"There is nothing there to start on its own," he said. "That's why it's suspicious."
And troublesome to Huntington Police Detective Chris Sperry, residents and other investigators.
"It's got us concerned that you've got an individual, or individuals, out here burning property endangering innocent people," Sperry said.
He said police continue to investigate.
Linking the fires is that each occurred during early morning hours at vacant structures in the Fairfield neighborhood.
Sperry explained arsons endanger more than the property they burn. They place emergency personnel and neighboring houses at risk. He encouraged residents to remain vigilant, watching for anyone or anything suspicious, such as vehicles or persons moving around in areas where they do not belong at early hours in the morning.
Anyone with information should contact the state's arson hotline at 800-233-FIRE, the Huntington Fire Department at 304-696-5960 or the Huntington Police Department at 304-696-4420.
Huntington Fire Marshal David Bias also has called upon people to keep a watchful eye and safeguard their own properties. Tips include securing each opening, especially garages, along with clearing extra debris that can double as a fuel source for an arsonist. Such debris could include tree limbs, trash, toys and old couches.
Three fires have been reported in the area of the 2000 block of 10th Street since Dec. 14. Wednesday's fire was a block away.
The most recent fires were reported at 12:56 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the 1900 block of Doulton Avenue; about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the 2000 block of 10th Avenue; 1:41 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the 1100 block of 28th Street; and 2:54 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the 2000 block of 10th Avenue.
