Special meeting addresses preventing underage drinking
The WV Alcohol Beverage Control Administration hosted a special meeting between local bar owners and law enforcement officials Thursday at the Eagle Distribution Center.
The two groups discussed various ways to deal with underage drinking in Huntington.
"Being a college town, we can't stop underage drinking, but we can make it a lot harder to accomplish," Enforcement Supervisor Craig Shelton said.
The group discussed possible ways to stagger closing times, suggestions for searching suspects and enforcement officials also gave advice on spotting suspicious activity.
Law enforcement officials also answered questions about bar owners' liability for illegal activity.
Scott McClure, the city attorney, also confirmed despite rumor, no ordinance placing a moratorium on new bars and clubs in the Central Business District was passed. Due to the density of bars and nightclubs, he said it may be considered later.
McClure stressed that anything that would be considered would have to withstand Constitutional scrutiny and protect businesses property ownership rights.
