Tri-County YMCA to offer Tai Chi classes
SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. -- The Tri-County YMCA will soon offer Tai Chi classes aimed at the needs of arthritis sufferers.
Marty Bavetz, YMCA physical and wellness director, said that Tai Chi, a Chinese exercise, is a gentle, flowing set of movements based on traditional Chinese practices for health and fitness. "The class is geared toward individuals who have various forms of arthritis and stiff joints, but is good for any kind of fitness level," he said.
He explained that benefits of Tai Chi include increased flexibility, muscle strength and fitness, help in healing, reducing pain and stiffness, improving relaxation and integrating mind and body, to name a few.
The six-week beginner's Tai Chi for arthritis class will begin Sept. 23 and be on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. A free demonstration class will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 6. Certified instructor Cathy Pleska will demonstrate, along with other Tai Chi practitioners, different forms of the exercise and discuss the history and practice of the movements.
For more information, call the YMCA at 304-757-0016 or call Cathy Pleska at 304-757-4109.
