Huntington man wins $250 in gas tax giveaway
HUNTINGTON -- Shawn Beckom of Huntington was chosen as the sixth winner of West Virginians for Better Transportation's Gas Tax Giveaway.
He was randomly selected out of the more than 3,700 entrants to the contest thus far, and will receive a $250 gasoline debit card.
The organization launched the contest on July 7, and the prize is intended to cover a person's average state gasoline taxes for a one-year period, which is $250. The contest runs through Sept. 1 and is open to all West Virginia residents 18 or older. To register, enter your information after using the organization's new gas tax calculator at www.keepwvmoving.org/gastax/default.aspx.
State gasoline taxes are the major revenue source for West Virginia's Road Fund, accounting for approximately 60 percent, West Virginians for Better Transportation says. The money is used for maintenance and repairs on roads and bridges, snow removal services, paving, guard rails and other services.
