Church to host nondenominational Thanksgiving service

November 20, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The annual Community Thanksgiving Service by the Huntington downtown congregations will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, 5th Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Huntington.

The event will be nondenominational and will feature multiple religious traditions.

"Three of the world's great religious traditions, Jewish, Islamic and Christian, will join in thanksgiving to God," Johnson Memorial Pastor John W. Lipphardt said in a press release. "The participating congregations are pleased to invite others to share with us in offering thanks to the God we love for blessings great and small."

The event will include choral performances of Carl F. Mueller's "The One Hundredth Psalm" as an anthem and will conclude the service with Peter Lutkin's "The Lord Bless You and Keep You." The choir will feature members from multiple downtown congregations and will be directed by Johnson Memorial Music Director Robert Wray. Members should arrive at the church at 5:15 p.m. to rehearse. Organist Rebecca Sturm will accompany the combined choir and congregational singing.

Rabbi David E. Wucher of B'Nai Sholom Congregation will deliver the evening homily. Clergy and representatives from different congregations will participate in leading the service.

Participating congregations include B'Nai Sholom Congregation, Central Christian Church, Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Muslim Association of Huntington, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Donations at the service will go to the Cridlin Food Pantry and Clothes Closet.
