LAVALETTE, W.Va. -- The kids at Lavalette Elementary in Wayne County are one step closer to having two renovated playgrounds thanks to the donation of $15,000 on Tuesday.
Principal Michael Rash said Rock Springs Development, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources, presented a $10,000 check to the school and the Wayne County Board of Education promised to give the school $5,000 for new equipment for the school's two playgrounds. Rash said the donations will go a long way toward the purchase of new equipment and the renovation of the playgrounds.
Rash said younger kids, from pre-school to first grade, use one playground while the older kids use the other one. Both, Rash said, are in need of renovation.
New playground equipment was needed after the old wooden equipment started to rot and became unsafe for the kids to play on. Rash said basic playground equipment costs between $10,000 and $20,000.
Rash said the school's parent-teacher organization hopes to raise another $5,000 by the end of the year. The school serves 190 kids from pre-school to 5th grade.
