COMING UP: Cabell County Library Gala

WHAT: Cabell County Public Library Gala features the theme An African Adventure, focusing on the culture of South Africa.

WHEN: A reception is set for 6:30 p.m. and the dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6.

WHERE: Don Morris Room of the Marshall Memorial Student Center

ON THE MENU: The South African menu will include Kaltschae (cold cucumber and potato soup), Mschicha Wa Nazi (spinach salad with coconut vinaigrette), Camarao Grelhado Piripiri (broiled shrimp skewers with lemon butter), and roasted root vegetables, with Banana Fritters for dessert.

The appropriate South African wine will be served with each course.

WHO: The program will feature Marshall University's African Drum and Dance Ensemble. Additionally, the Jeslyn Dance Gallery's professional dance group will perform some African-inspired dances. Local author Dr. John Hunt, who wrote the memoir "White Witch Doctor" about his life in Africa, will have a slide-show culled from the best of his 2,000 photos of Africa. Dumisle Martin from Standardsville, Va., will be selling authentic Sithabe African crafts.

WHY: The event helps raise money for children's books, audio and visual material, computer stations and classes and other cultural and educational programs for people of all ages.

TICKETS: Gala tickets are $150 a person, with corporate tables encouraged.
