ZZ Top fires up crowd at Keith-Albee

October 05, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

Saturday night, every Huntington girl went crazy over a "Sharp Dressed Man" at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center.

They were pretty excited about the rest of ZZ Top's catalog as well, and of course the guys were just as pumped about seeing the bearded bikers. Couples like Kirk and Janet McDonald said they have been waiting to see ZZ Top for more than five decades.

"I am pretty wound up," Kirk McDonald said, "I really like 'Under Pressure,' man."

A few fans refused to wait for ZZ Top to come to them, seeing them locally was just a bonus.

"I am very excited; we went to South Dakota to see ZZ Top at the first of August," said Earl Dotson, a biker from Mingo County who said he has seen the band at least five times. "I only listen to three bands: AC/DC, Bob Seger and ZZ Top."

When questioned about his reason as to what makes ZZ Top a great band, Dotson provides a simple answer.

"Billy Gibbons," Dotson said bluntly, citing the name of ZZ Top's guitarist and frequent vocalist.

Marc Dailey first saw ZZ Top at a show with Alice Cooper, he also said he saw them when they came to the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. He said he was excited to see how the venue worked with the atmosphere of a ZZ Top concert.

"I just hope the structure can withstand it," Dailey said. "There just aren't many bands like them. They have been together for nearly 40 years and are just so consistent in what they do. ZZ Top is it's own genre."

The ages of the crowd members stretched across man generations, and attire ranged from "just stepped off a bike" to "just stepped out of the bank".

Though a few in the crowd were seasoned ZZ Top veterans, a few people were there for their first ZZ Top show.

"I'm super excited about the show, " said Kristen Bowles, who came along with a friend who had won free tickets to the show. "I just tagged along, I really don't know too much about ZZ Top."

Bowles friend, Catoya Dalton, spoke more enthusiastically about the band, claiming Saturday night was her third ZZ Top show.

"The first show I went to I snuck in," Dalton said. "The second show I paid for, but then I won tickets to this one, it's worked out well. I love the song Pearl Necklace," she said while tugging at a string of pearls around her neck.

"But ZZ Top really puts on a great show and I look forward to hearing them again and again."

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members ZZ Top perform on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.
