Point Pleasant graduate named finalist for Ms. Mountaineer
MORGANTOWN -- A Point Pleasant High School graduate has been named a finalist for Ms. Mountaineer at West Virginia University.
Rebecca Durst, a nursing student, also is the founding co-chairwoman of the Freshman Advisory Board, was named one of the top 10 "people of the year" by The Daily Athenaeum and is a Mountaineer Week committee member.
She is best known for being the second woman to be the official Mountaineer Mascot during her sophomore year in 2009.
The Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer titles are in recognition of students' exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. All applicants must be eligible for graduation by May 2012 to be considered. Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer are part of Mountaineer Week, which takes place Oct. 26 through Nov. 4.
After an interview in front of the Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer voting committee, one male and female finalist will be named at the Nov. 3 football game against Texas Christian University at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Durst will be escorted by Ron and Jody Durst.
The other finalists include: Patrick Cushing of Morgantown; John Higgins of Philippi; Byron Patterson of Upper Black Eddy, Pa.; Taylor Richmond of Beckley; Jonathan Turner of Fairmont; Kacie Legg of Sissonville; Katrina Weimer of Akron, Ohio; Sarah Beth Yoder of Moundsville; and Hilah Zia of Morgantown.
