October 31, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Mountwest Community and Technical College employees on Tuesday paid tribute to one of their own who lost her battle with breast cancer and raised money for a scholarship fund named in her memory with a Pink Out event.

Karen Johnson, a 27-year Mountwest employee, died in October 2011 after a long battle with breast cancer.

Tuesday's event, which included a welcome from college President Dr. Keith Cotroneo, survivors' lap and Kiss a Pig fundraiser, was designed to raise money for the Karen Johnson scholarship fund while bringing awareness to the community about the disease. The first scholarship will be awarded in the spring to a breast cancer survivor or someone currently battling the disease. Tuesday's event raised more than $2,700.

The day also included raffle sales, concessions and information booths from local health care organizations.

Community members who would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund can send a check payable to the Mountwest Foundation with Karen Johnson scholarship fund noted on the memo line.
