ASHLAND -- Shelter of Hope in Ashland will recognize national Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week Nov. 10-18 with two events.
On Thursday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the shelter will host its third annual STAND DOWN in collaboration with more than 40 other agencies. STAND DOWN is a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to not only help homeless veterans, but also the general homeless population. The event will take place at Neighbors Helping Neighbors, 2516 Carter Ave., Ashland, and will include information on housing assistance, veterans' programs, employment resource, educational opportunities, medical care and more. Lunch will be provided.
On Friday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the shelter will host its third annual Night Without a Home event designed to promote advocacy and awareness for the cause of homelessness. The event will take place regardless of weather conditions on the vacant lot behind First Christian Church, 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland, and will include guest speakers, music and a candlelight vigil. Participants should bring a chair or box to sit on in addition to a collection of toiletry items to help stock the shelter's emergency pantry.
